A refractometer measures the refractive index of a liquid, which is affected by the concentration of dissolved solids or additives. By placing a drop of the metalworking fluid on the refractometer’s prism and measuring the refraction of light passing through it, the refractometer provides a reading that correlates to the concentration of the coolant additives.

A refractometer is an important tool in metalworking fluids because it helps in determining the concentration or the ratio of coolant additives in the fluid. Metalworking fluids, such as cutting fluids, coolants, and lubricants, are used in various machining processes to improve tool life, reduce friction, and dissipate heat. These fluids often consist of a mixture of water and various additives, such as corrosion inhibitors, lubricants, and surfactants.

The concentration of these additives is crucial for achieving optimal performance, efficiency and reducing costs in metalworking operations. If the concentration is too high, it can lead to problems like reduced cooling capacity, increased fluid viscosity, and decreased tool life. If the concentration is too low, it may not provide sufficient lubrication or corrosion protection.

Metalworkers can use this information to monitor and adjust the concentration of additives in the metalworking fluid to ensure it remains within the recommended range.   1. Keep the site glass clean
  2. Regularly calibrate the refractometer using the water you use for coolant mixing
